Headshots by Brian McConkey
Want a good headshot? Relax, have fun with it. Your expressions will be better.

Have an idea of what kind of picture/s you want to market yourself with. Do you need a commercial shot? Do you need a theatrical shot? If you want to do trade show work then you may need a more "professional" looking shot in a business suit. Getting ready. Bring the clothing suited for the different looks that you want to achieve. If necessary, do some shopping.

Bring some music that gets you energized. Maybe have your photographer hire a make-up stylist so you don't have to worry about doing it yourself. Make sure that you discuss any make-up questions that you may have with your stylist Bring some light colored clothing as well as darker clothing. Texture is good. Also be careful of bringing to many light colored things as these may be a flesh-toned color and could blend with skin tones. Remember your headshot is most likely in black and white film. For you gals don't forget to bring different bras that correspond to the different tops that you have.

Here are a few examples of good and not so good shots:

Photo #1 is an "I'm not having too much fun" type of shot. Shop around until you have found a photographer that you feel comfortable with.

#2 Too much shadow in the face. Some may comment that they can't see your face.

#3 Much more evenly lit. Plus it is a nice smile and the eyes don't show any hesitation or question. Good commercial shot.

#4 Good commercial shot. Nice expression in the eyes. Energetic.

#5 Good theatrical shot. It's a confident expression and she even has a little mystery to it.

#6 Careful of the "floating head."

#7 This shot has a some hesitation in the eyes.
Remember to be yourself and have fun with it!
